Operator and maintenance course for mobile and portable cranes

HDS crane

Training as HDS crane maintenance technician

We have created a comprehensive UDT course for anyone who would like to become certified as a maintainer or operator of mobile and portable cranes, known as HDS. We offer lectures and exercises where we teach you how to operate and maintain these devices, and how to carry out their inspections. We help you with all the formalities for the final exam and with setting a specific date for the course. Please see below for details of the training course.

Training program

Course for mobile and portable crane operators is divided into two parts. In the first part, trainees will acquire theoretical knowledge, while the second part will consist of practical application of the information acquired. The students will steer the crane themselves and carry out activities related to the transport of loads. Topics such as:

  • legal regulations for the technical supervision and operation of HDS cranes,
  • rights and obligations of the operator,
  • construction and operation of mobile and portable cranes,
  • characteristics of the various components of cranes (including slings),
  • practical operation of cranes,
  • determination of the centre of gravity in load transfer,
  • fire and health and safety regulations.

Maintenance course for mobile and portable cranes also includes a theoretical and a practical part. While the training staff discusses very similar issues to the operator course, the exercises look slightly different. The trainees have the opportunity to carry out an inspection of the cranes, as well as other maintenance activities. At the beginning, however, participants gain knowledge on, among other things:

  • construction of mobile and portable cranes,
  • legal records and documentation,
  • responsibilities in maintenance work,
  • types of faults and damage to equipment and their repair,
  • maintenance activities,
  • possible risks and hazards in the workplace,
  • behaviour in times of danger,
  • health, safety and hygiene regulations.

State examination

Both courses conclude with a state exam supervised by a commission from the Office of Technical Inspection. First, participants take a test part, consisting of closed questions, and then they can proceed to perform a task on the machine. Depending on whether the person has trained as a crane operator or crane maintainer, he or she is assigned a task to operate or maintain the machine. If the trainee passes both parts, he or she is given a licence to work in the position for which they trained. Such a document is valid for 10 years. After this time, it is not necessary to take any courses - it is sufficient to apply to the Office of Technical Inspection for an extension of the entitlement.

Purpose of training

The most important objective of both courses is to prepare participants for the state examination and to obtain the necessary licences for their work. It is also extremely important to prepare the trainees for their chosen position, training them to be able to carry out their duties as soon as they are certified.

Requirements for candidates

Anyone wishing to take our operator or maintenance training course must be at least 18 years of age and have no contraindications to working in the position (a medical certificate must be presented). In addition, those training to become an operator must have a category C driving licence.

Mobile and portable cranes - characteristics

Mobile and portable cranes are classified as material handling equipment. They are located on a truck chassis and consist of a jib and an arm, which is usually terminated with a hook or other attachment for gripping loads. They are called truck cranes and handling cranes which refers to their function and location. They are used to transport goods of various sizes, as well as to move and transport them. They should be used in an open area so as to prevent poisoning by exhaust gases. However, it is worth noting that they should not be used during strong winds, storms and fog, which significantly reduce visibility.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a course for an operator and one for a HDS crane maintainer?

In the mobile and portable crane operator course, trainees learn in detail about the construction and operation of the machine, and in practical classes learn how to use it. In maintenance training, on the other hand, students learn how to inspect this equipment and how to carry out the various crane maintenance tasks.

Who issues the HDS crane operator licence?

The operator and maintenance licence for mobile and portable cranes is issued by the Office of Technical Inspection. They are valid for 10 years.

Who is the mobile crane operator course for?

The course on the operator's licence for mobile and portable cranes is intended for people who would like to work as maintenance operators of these machines. In addition, such a person should be of full age and have no health contraindications to work in this position. He or she should also have a category C driving licence.
