Training for cableway and ski-lift operators

We would like to invite you to take advantage of our training offer for ropeways and ski lifts. Rope railways and ski lifts are transport devices which allow people to travel along a designated rope track running over a given area using "gondolas", carriages or chairs. Railways of this type are also used for the transport of goods.

In order to work with cable cars and ski lifts, you need to have the right qualifications and, therefore, knowledge and preparation. You can acquire all this in a suitable course at our training centre. Qualified staff, comprehensive knowledge and many hours of practical and theoretical lessons will enable you to acquire the necessary qualifications.

Cableways - a breakdown

Passenger cableways, i.e. UTL (ropeways) are designed to transport people in vehicles supported and moved by one or more ropes. They include the following types of railway.

Shuttle cableways - overhead, where vehicles move between stations in a back and forth, shuttling motion.

Ropeways - vehicles are moved by means of one or more cables along the track, which may be laid directly on the ground or on permanent structures;

Circular cableways - are overhead railways where vehicles are connected by rope using fixed or uncoupled couplings. They move in the same direction along their pistons, including:

  • cableways with continuous operation - overhead, in which the drive rope or the hauling rope moves at a uniform speed;
  • railways pulsating motion - overhead, where the drive rope or carrier rope moves intermittently or at a speed that varies periodically as a function of the position of the vehicles;
  • gondola cableways - overhead, where the vehicles are gondolas;
  • open gondola cableways - overhead, where the vehicles are open gondolas;
  • chairlifts - overhead, where the vehicles are chairs.

Single-rope trains - overhead, where vehicles are supported and moved by one or more cables.

Two-cable railway - overhead, vehicles here are supported and moved by separate cables or by a group of cables.

List of certified qualifications

  • platform operators;
  • maintainers of rope handling equipment;
  • drivers of rope handling equipment.

The training programme includes, but is not limited to:

  • information on types of handling equipment - cableways and ski lifts;
  • the types of authorisation needed to operate, as well as maintain, cableways and ski lifts;
  • basic information on technical supervision of cableways and ski lifts;
  • construction of ski lifts;
  • construction of overhead cableways with circular traffic;
  • information on the safety of the use of cableways and ski lifts;
  • proper evacuation of passengers at the time of an emergency;

Our courses and training courses conclude with an examination, which is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical.

Theoretical examination

It will cover general knowledge, health and safety principles, construction, safe operation of UTLs and specialist knowledge for specific groups of UTLs. During the theoretical part, the candidate will solve a single-choice test.

Practical exam

It includes:

  • discussing and reviewing the principles involved in the safe operation of the UTL,
  • discussion of the required tests and motor checks,
  • discussing and carrying out recommended maintenance,
  • carrying out tests and movement checks,
  • completion of examination tasks set by the examiner, covering the UTL work cycles,
  • discussion of the vehicle check procedure,
  • discussing the procedure for evacuating passengers.

Candidates must:

  • be at least 18 years of age,

Questions and answers

Can your instructors deliver training at the client's premises?

Of course, we offer this possibility. However, our clients must meet minimum requirements in terms of access to teaching and technical facilities. The client is also responsible for ensuring safety conditions, in particular the smooth operation of technical equipment, which should have a valid inspection by a maintenance technician and periodic tests.

Is it possible to attend classes remotely?

Yes, our facility runs online classes. Participants take part in webinars led by our instructors. These classes are in an activity-based format so that they resemble in-person classes as much as possible.
